Las banderas y el Protestódromo

Cuba is very proud. It is the only place I’ve been where flags are even more ubiquitous than they are in the United States. This last photo shows the Plaza Anti-Imperialista, a place that has come to be known by Cubans as the Protestódromo (a loose translation of this Cubanism might come out as the “protest race track”). Many a Cuban has complained after being forced to leave work and go protest against the latest atrocity that the United States has committed. “Hoy nos toca protestar.” Great…again?!? No sarcasm intented.

Monument to the Maine

“A las víctimas de El Maine que fueron sacrificadas por la voracidad imperialista en su afán de apoderarse de la isla de Cuba.” Here is a classic humorous Cuban monument, loaded with irony.

Parque John Lennon

Another ironic monument. The Beatles were formerly banned as anti-revolutionary, but really…who could be any more revolutionary than John Lennon?

You may say that I’m a dreamer, but I’m not the only one. John Lennon, Imagine

You say you want a revolution
Well, you know
We all want to change the world
You tell me that it's evolution
Well, you know
We all want to change the world
But when you talk about destruction
Don't you know that you can count me out?

Don't you know it's gonna be
Alright?
Alright?
Alright?

El cubano es multi-oficio

This man invited me to his house to see the floor he was constructing to make another bedroom. I thought this horizontal door coming up to the bedroom was pretty clever.
