On November 7, 1805 Lewis and Clark with the Corps of Discovery had reached the Pacific Ocean or so they thought. They were at the mouth of the Columbia River, which is massive. Clark wrote in his diary some of my favorite lines in all of literature:"Ocian in view! O! the joy."
Also, this is the site of an important vote that decided where to set up winter quarters. Long before Susan B. Anthony or the fifteenth amendment, Sacajawea and Clark's servant York took part in early American democracy.
