Heading up Welcome Pass, a trail that gains 2800 vertical feet in a little under 2 miles. It is the quickest way up to the alpine meadows but it is also the most grueling. I love the alpine mushroom growing in the snow.

Shanghai is a city of expats and foreigners who live in their parallel universes while the locals zip around on motor bikes that are like Star Wars speeder bikes. The Confucian and Lama temples are quiet escapes, repose from the absurd masses of people in the Beijing streets and subways. We popped out of a rush hour subway trip from the train station in the Lama temple with our suitcases and were blown away by its spiritual activity. There is a tremendous amount of force involved with the cedar strips coming together at each end. Each strip needs to be carefully maneuvered into its spot. You can see everything is held in place with 20-pound monofilament fishing line and clamps. We have also put to use the canoe-carrying straps for the truck to hinge the strips together.

This is where Lewis and Clark and the Corps of Discovery during the winter of 1805-06. It rained most of the days here. Members of the expedition traded with the local Indians for smoked salmon and berries. Because of prior exposure to Europeans, who came for the fur trade, the Clatsops were shrewd traders. Clark was exceedingly impressed with their canoe-making skills.

We went out to the vampire town of Forks (of Twilight fame), where they get some 120 inches of rain every year, to go get boards of beautiful fallen and recovered Old Growth Western Red and Yellow Cedar. The boards were clear of knots and our friend Bill estimated them to be some 400 years old.

To make the forms, you have to trace the plans into poster board and then cut the forms from plywood. Because of my drawing skills, this is a part of the project I am glad that I didn't take part in.
